Threats to Recovery

Today, the biggest threats to overall black-footed ferret recovery are sylvatic plague and lack of suitable reintroduction sites. Through a partnership with U.S. Army Medical Department and the U.S. Geological Survey a safe and effective experimental sylvatic plague vaccine has been developed for black-footed ferrets.

BFFRIT members are working on a couple of innovative management tools, an oral vaccine to address plague in prairie dogs and an incentive package for landowners. We remain confident that the black-footed ferret will someday be fully recovered!
